Canon Service Mode Tool is a program developed by Canon which can be used to diagnose, measure, and update the camera firmware. This software is a must have for Canon users. In this post I will tell you about tool's new functionality. The current version is 1.050 for the following Canon models: 1Dx, 5D, 6D, 20Da, 30Da, 40D, 50D, 60Da. The Canon Service Mode Tool can be downloaded from this link: http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0009/tools/0009f006s01040d1050/index.html After download run it and when it starts click [Next] to proceed to [Tool Selection]. In next window select [Communication Tools] and click [Next]. In next window select [CANON SERVICE MODE TOOL V1.050] and click [Next]. In following window make sure you understand the agreement text and if you agree with it click [Next]. After that a new window will open. In this window you need to select the camera model that you wish to update. To do that click on your camera model from the list in right side of this window. After that click on [Next]. Before firmware update you need to make sure that your camera is not writing any files to the memory card. After camera is stopped do not take the card out, leave it in the camera. After you have selected your camera model click [Next]. In following window make sure you agree with terms and conditions of Canon Inc. If you agree then click [Agree] and then click [Next]. After that a new window will open. In this window you will need to select the way how you want to update your firmware. For this tool you can choose one of the following options: Update your firmware via Web browser. You will need to download the update file from the link below tto your computer. After that you need to upload it to your camera via SD card. Then plug SD card into card reader, insert it into your computer and let the tool do the update. If you select this option then after that you will have to plug SD card into your camera and then start the camera by pressing [MENU/OK] button somewhere on top of the camera body.
